Even when I quickly leaf through a script, I always start with a close reading and a evaluation of the first page, before moving on. I believe that most film script do or die right here. And I know I’m not the only professional thinking so. This is the reason why I tell my students to put a lot of effort in getting the opening scene right. Learn Screenwriting by Writing a Treatment of a Filmscript

A film-script treatment is the launching pad to a first draft script. When I read a treatment I want it to be like a short story, written in the present tense. A piece of good prose. A treatment comes in two types, a presentation treatment and an original draft treatment. They are usually around 40 pages in the States, but I want you to write me a shorter one of ten pages. In Europe the treatments are normally between 10 and 20 pages. From this treatment I will give you personal feedback in order to move on to complete a first draft or expand it to the two types of treatments mentioned above.

Learn Screenwriting by Analysing Turning Points in a Film Script

Beginners must start at the beginning and learn from the masters. I often give my students assignments where they have to analyse great film scripts in order to teach them structure and format. So, leave your own film script alone for a while and focus on how specific turning points in a script shapes a character. This will teach you how to structure your own scripts better and get a more objective eye on the art of scriptwriting. Amongst several awards, Brian received a Scottish International Education Trust grant (run by Sir Sean Connery) to attend NYU film school in New York. He presently teaches film writing at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland and at Örebro University, Sweden.
