Learn Graphic Design by Designing a Logotype Where the Wordmark Is an Ambigram

Bending shapes and viewers perception of how to interpret the shapes you make is a core skill a great graphic designer must train. I’m of the belief that designers need to keep training just like athletes. To be able to see similarities in shapes where to others there is non, and to know how to make them apparent to the untrained eye, that takes contestant practice. This assignment of creating an ambigram, words that can be read from different angles, is the one I use myself to keep in shape, and a urge students to not just do it, but to really focus on how they think when designing anamorphic shapes out of a base shape. My personalized feedback on your work will give you a direction on how to become even better on tweaking great design ideas into solutions that will work for the attitude you need to communicate.

The Assignment you need to complete to improve from the feedback of Mr. Seo

  • Use Adobe Illustrator to draw a wordmark where the letters forms other letters if read from a different angel. The classic ambigram usually spells the same word when flipped up-side-down but feel free to experiment.
  • Try to have a clear goal of what word you want to use before you start the assignment since this is an exercise in goal-oriented graphic design and not happy coincidences.
  • Design a base shape and then do two versions where you explore that base shape into two final versions. One soft cuddly version, and one hard authoritative version.
  • Send in the base shape along with the two styled versions.

Feedback will at first hand focus on the following features your assignment

  • How easy it is to read your wordmark from both angels
  • How well you manage to create a base shape
  • How well you manage to style the same shape in two directions
  • The quality of the artwork from a corporate identity design perspective
